Baggies beat Liverpool despite Long miss

West Brom stunned 10-man Liverpool with a resounding 3-0 victory to mark the start of the Steve Clarke era in style in this Barclays Premier League encounter at The Hawthorns.

A superb strike from Zoltan Gera, Peter Odemwingie's penalty plus a header from on-loan newcomer Romelu Lukaku made it a miserable day for new Reds boss Brendan Rodgers.

Liverpool also had defender Daniel Agger sent off early in the second period and looked a shambles at the back in the final half hour. Their day was summed up by striker Luis Suarez, who could have had a hat-trick before Liverpool were swept aside after Agger's dismissal.

Albion started brightly and Liam Ridgewell was only just too high with a 20-yard drive while Shane Long's chip flew over the bar after he dispossessed Lucas Leiva. But the first save of note came from Baggies keeper Ben Foster, who parried away a powerful 20-yard drive from Suarez after a weaving run.

The home side were fortunate to win a free-kick when Long stumbled over Martin Skrtel but Steven Reid was unable to take advantage as his set piece was deflected wide. Suarez should have scored after half an hour when heading over from the edge of the six-yard box after attacking a Glen Johnson centre.

Albion came back strongly in the final minutes of the half which culminated in them taking the lead after 42 minutes. James Morrison's centre was headed away by Skrtel but Gera seized on the ball and in an instant flashed an unstoppable rising shot past Pepe Reina from 20 yards out.

Liverpool started the second half on the offensive and Suarez floated a free-kick wide after being brought down on the edge of the box by Youssouf Mulumbu. But the Baggies weathered the initial storm and doubled their lead from the second of two penalties awarded them in the space of six minutes.

The Reds were reduced to 10 men after 58 minutes when Agger pulled back Long just inside the box only for the Republic of Ireland striker's weak spot kick to be saved by Reina. But referee Phil Dowd awarded another penalty when he adjudged that Skrtel had tripped Long. Odemwingie took the spot-kick and hammered the ball past Reina.

Suarez missed a golden chance to reduce the arrears when he shot over from six yards after Foster had dropped a Steven Gerrard corner.

But Albion were now carving chances at will and Morrison shot wide with the goal at his mercy before substitute Lukaku put the icing on the cake for Albion after 77 minutes. Mulumbu's shot was deflected into the path of Ridgewell and his lovely lob to the back post was headed in at the far post by the on-loan Chelsea player.

So what happened to challenging in the top 4? WBA 5th favourites for relegation and they thrashed you, pure and simple. Liverpool seem like they will be battling the like of Villa for 17th place this season. Come on Pool what are you playing at its all so second rate.

Fantastic victory today for the baggies, fully deserved and it might put the stupid liverpool fans back down to earth and make them realise they are not as good as they used to be BOING BOING!!!!!!

To add insult to injury...that new kit is an awful shade of red, rather like the color of the embarrassed faces on the Liverpool "players".

West brom totally out played the pool today, so much for this passing game and retaining the ball philosophy that Rodgers was going to bring to liverpool, I don't think they put half a dozen passes together.

Lfc got off lightly, it could have been 7 or 8!

Rodgers claims about the ref remind me of kennys excuses, both penalty decisions were correct.

Well done the baggies, another long season ahead for the scousers!

Not for the first time I tell you LFC fans...Rogers didnt make the Swans the team they were last year..we were playing passing football since the Martinez days...the media made Rogers what he is, and your yankee owners believe every thing in the media, and as I've  said pbefore other great Liverpool managers would be disgusted that his ambition is to make Liverpool play like Swansea,,,sorry but that is what will happen, he has no plan B,, this season we Swans have played with two strikers , not Danny Graham coping on his own..scored 7 in preseason games and 5 today.;...and the excuses he made today. as Liverpool manager..So many positives from the dispay....crap. I genuinely feel sorry for a club I always admired from the days of Tosh, Keagan and so many others.

Oh Liverpool what have you done! As the saying goes, You can only reap what you sow! You never gave Dalglish and Clarke the chance to achieve results, you sacked them and brought in a guy from nowhere with no footballing pedigree. What did you expect? To make matters even worse, you did not just get beat 3-0 by WBA you got beaten by Steve Clarke after sacking him! Also did you happen to see what Swansea did to QPR without Rodgers, 5-0! Just about says it all! Keep going the way you are and who knows, you could end up like The Rangers in a 3rd division!

From a lifelong Liverpool fan.R.I.P.L.F.C.Who the f**k is running this club?Sack the manager now and give me the job.At least I would care and get rid of anyone who thinks that wearing a Liverpool shirt is not the most priviledged thing in the world.Bring back the old days when people were proud to wear the shirt!

YNWA...You'll Never Win Again? lol Liverpool fans are now just living on past glories i think, all the talk pre season about title challenges and Champions League are pure fantasy. West Brom destroyed you should have been by more goals aswell time to get real... always looking for someone to blame aswell how many more managers need sacking before it clicks that gerrard and co are past thier best and the new players brought in are not good enough to compete with even average prem sides. Can't keep blaming the manager... the next manager will just inherit the crap the previous one did and so on...time these losers lived up to thier ridiculous price tags and wages?

Dont understand why liverpool fans are moaning you seem to think that you have the team you had when dalglish was in his prime but the team they have at this stage is nowhere near good enough to challenge for top 4 or europe they have an average team with average players such as henderson and adam who are a waste of time allen is over rated aswell as borini gerrad is past it and they were humiliated by a team that all the liverpool fans were saying was going to be an easy 3 points dont underestimate the baggies we have a brilliant team this year now you all have egg on your faces, continue to moan becaue the result doesnt lie your team just isnt good enough simple as that pundits say we are favourite to go down this year well if were to go down liverpool will be coming with us and im guarentee another top half finish for the albion this year COME ON YOU BAGGIES
