Gareth Bale has been ruled out of the Olympics by injury

Tottenham winger Gareth Bale has suffered an injury that will rule him out of Great Britain's Olympic football squad, Press Association Sport understands.

Bale was widely anticipated to be included in manager Stuart Pearce's GB team for the Olympic tournament starting at the end of next month.

But it is understood the 22-year-old Wales international has suffered a recurrence of an old back and hip injury after pulling up while running.

isnt the point of the olympics for amateur athletes to compete for medals, not for professionals earning thousands of pounds a week to come in & do a bit of glory hunting

Why all this crap about football team GB ....why dont they make it a contest for non top league players ....like   no players from  prem league or the top flight leagues in other countries ....all the uk prem clubs don't want their players injured in the olympic games and nor do the supporters ,,,but lower clubs would revel in it ... just a thought...OR WHAT ABOUT RETIRED PLAYERS MAKING UP THE TEAMS ......THERE YOU GO BECKS ....THATS AN  IDEAL  IDEA  FOR YOU ! TAKE IT UP YOU CAN STILL PLAY IN  THE NEXT OYLIMPIC'S .....  THERE JOB DONE !!!!!!!!!

I'm sure tottenham is happy he will be missing the olympics. Why not call up Daniel Sturridge to play in an attacking left sided role, he deserves the chance.

David Beckham has served this country both on & off the field. he is respected the world over.
It is shameful that Pearce has not selected him to play for Team GB. What a fitting way for us to pay our Nations thanks to a former England Captain, and who knows the effect his selection would have on the youngsters selected to play alongside him.  We stand a better chance with him than without him. It would also sell many of the empty seats they are worried about!
Playing alongside Giggs feeding crosses in from both flanks to the youngsters, awesome thought.

funny that... I reckon he and spurs would like to save him for the new season.....I wonder if he will suffer during the season with this 'injury' -me thinks not! Also coincides with a new contract at spurs...

probably got pulled our by spurs ,they wouldn,t want him to risk injury to him just as the premiership season is about to start.

Beckham should be in team - shame on Pearce for showing his jealousy, nobody knows who Pearce is but the world knows Beckham.

What a shame Bale, cannot compete for Britain, because Bale, is the only true world class player born in the British isles, playing in England today. For those of you that disagree with me, I suggest you cast your mind back to the night Bale, scored three goals against Milan, and ran rings around the Italian teams defenders. Bale, is still a young man, and I predict he will be massive in the years to come.

Before you start slating Pearce, you should look at his under 21's success. The young players you all seem to be calling for in the senior squad, all came through or are still part of  it, and their record puts the seniors to shame for the last four years
