Balotelli says he was subject to racist chants

Alvaro Pereira scores an own goal, FC Porto v Manchester City, Europa League, Estadio do Dragao, February 16, 2012

Mario Balotelli played a big role in Manchester City's equaliser

Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli has said he was subjected to racist abuse during the Europa League win at Porto on Thursday.

Although manager Roberto Mancini did not hear the abuse, Balotelli has told a club official he heard abusive chanting during the game at the Estadio do Dragao, which City won 2-1. It is not yet known whether the Italian intends to complain.

Reports circulated during the match that Balotelli and Yaya Toure were subjected to monkey noises. But when asked about it, Mancini said: ''I didn't hear this because I was concentrating on the game. I don't know if (it happened) to Mario and Yaya.''

When asked if either player had mentioned it to him, he said: ''No.''

Otherwise, Mancini hailed his ''fantastic'' players after they came from behind to take the advantage after the first leg of the last-32 tie.

Sergio Aguero came off the bench to score the winner six minutes from time after an Alvaro Pereira own goal had cancelled out a Silvestre Varela strike.

Mancini said: ''I think it was a good result because it is difficult to win here. I think we won this game because we played very well and didn't give more chances to score to them. I think the guys were fantastic.''

Mancini was generally pleased with the performance of Balotelli, who had been playing his first game since serving a four-match domestic suspension for stamping on Tottenham's Scott Parker.

The City boss had spoken before the game of the importance of Balotelli remaining focused on the game ahead of a crucial period for the team.

He said: ''I think Mario did very well, he played very well. He was calm and it is important he continues like this. I think this [provocation] can happen every game.

''For this reason I spoke with Mario before the game. I said, 'Mario think and play, think what you should do during the game. Forget other things.' I think only this is important.''

Toure also had an influential role on his City return after missing eight games due to the African Nations Cup.

Mancini said: ''I think Yaya is an important player for us but Yaya can't win alone. He needs all the other players. I think this evening all the team played well because, if not, it is impossible to win here.

''I don't know how many Porto have lost on this pitch. I think if you win here you should play well with all the team. If not, it is impossible.''

Porto, last season's Europa League winners, went into the game boasting a formidable record. The Portuguese champions have lost just one league game this season and had not been beaten at home in a major competiton.

Mancini said: ''I think we are 60% to go to the next stage but we know we play always against Porto. Porto is a top team, a top squad.

''It will also be a difficult game in Manchester. We should keep the same concentration we had tonight.''

What a sad, bitter, twisted  thread this is.  I love football. I don't like Balotelli but  it has nothing to do with the colour of his skin. I detest racism. A footballer says he has been racially abused and what do we do? We insult each other's cultures as a means of criticising/justifying depending on our point of view. God help us all.

Seriously Tony have you actually listened to the garbage that comes out of your mouth?  And you are seriously deluded if you think decent normal people (the majority) can't see you for what you are - which is someone full of hate for no logical reason.  I suggest you concentrate your efforts in bettering yourself and you may just find you are at peace with people.  Who knows you might even start to think about what you actually say or write!!
And the vast  majority of us actually love the vast majority of the English.  It is people like you who don't otherwise you would do something worthwhile that actually benefits England and doesn't fill it with hate.

@Hardip.....just because my views are different to yours doesnt make them backward ok.....and the reason we are in the minority isnt because my views are wrong....its because there are more foreigners in this country compared to English thats what makes us the minority in our own country.....oil and water will never mix.....especially when the pakistanis are helping the Afghans in the war against terrorisim....none of us will ever forget 9/11 my friend....what....and that wasnt a RACIST attack on a white democratic society??

How does the money that a person earns mean that racist comments dont matter? The FA have shown that their campaign to kick Racism out of football hasnt worked. We should all work to kick racism out of society its not about football. The FA have a panel to retrospectively punish footballers for incidents that the referee didnt see? They all saw Suarez refuse to shake Evra's hand but thats not punishable? In my opinion he brought the game into disrepute and was guilty of ungentlemanly conduct but no punishment. Personally I would abolish the farce that is the handshake before the game and go back to the old ways where both teams went into their own half of the pitch before kick off. Let them shake hands at the final whistle if they want to!!

Thank you for taking the quiz.

So are you the racist for knowing what I meant, or am I racist by suggesting these words?

So if the referee is old, that's ageist.

No comments about women's football, that's sexist.

God doesn't exist, that's atheist.

Don't copy my posts, that's being a plagiarist.

I'm not surprised you would rather have Chris here because you share the same backward views, but I suppose you need all the support you can get cause the vast majority oppose you.  And in that instance you are also a minority.  As for your other pioint even those who have lived here most of their lives but have limited vocabulary can still read and write English better than people sharing your views.  Peole who can't read or write English but trying to better themselves and society or those who can barely read or write English but remain a drag on UK  - the insult is obvious.  Pity those who profess to stand up for the English or England don't devote time to its language and its wellbeing!

I would rather have Chris in this country compared to people like you....I'm suprised you can read and write English....most Asians cant....and they've lived in this country most of their lives....what an insult...

chris burford; You are absolutely correct when you say you are not a racist, just another englishman who doesn't even have the intelligence to be a racist, just another insult to the human race and another reason why the English are one of the most hated on the planet

Tony F - you have demonstrated your blinkered view.  Who says I don't like it here?  I love it here and my life has been made through my own back and I put back into society what it has provided me.  What have you actually done to benefit the UK?  And spurting out racsist nonsense is not a benefit!

Actually Chris I'm Asian.  Notice how I spelt your name correctly but obviously you can't say the same about me as intellect ability is beyond your grasp.  I am a second generation Asian but ask any decent person who they would rather have in this country, me and people like me or you and your ilk and the answer of the vast majority would be a blindingly obviously not you.  We are both hated in this country but only a tiny majority don't want me here but the vast majority would be happy to see you shipped out all day long.

And this my friends is what the black racist have done to our football  Evra is rubbing his hands with glee at what he started by pulling the race card a few weeks ago

@Hardip.....you sound like your part of the Asian Persuasion! If life in this country doesnt suit you then I suggest you go live in India, or wherever you come from my friend!....but if you did that you would'nt get any of the Free hand outs you get in this country would you?

I think if a black player, or a pakistani player or Bangladeshi player gets racially abused......we should give that player or person a Rent free house, pay for their four children to be put through the education system, free dental care, free hospital care, and protection from the law if anyone upsets them with a racial comment, even make it ILLIGAL to make a racial comment against these people...OH SORRY WE ALREADY DO THAT.....

I've looked at comments relating to this article on other sites and the vast majority are totally different to those here, which leads to the conclusion that this site is populated by right wing racist losers who's only ambition in life is to put people down.  To Chris Burford I'm not surprised your dog doesn't take any notice of you!!  And as for black birds, that says a lot as you probably don't have any contact with women.  So to him and the other BNP/EDL supporters on here you really ought to acknowledge the fact that the reason you have these views is because you are failures in life and trying to put others down is the only way you can justify your meagre existence.

To those saying "he's on £100k a week - if I was on that money I wouldn't moan, I would just deal with it."

Just because Balotelli earns a lot of money doesn't make the racist abuse less hurtful - he's a human at the end of the day and deserves to be treated with respect no matter how much he earns.

If we don't raise our concerns/issues with things such as these, they will continue to happen - and that is not acceptable, we should fight it wherever and whenever it occurs.
