live commentary

  •
Good evening and welcome to this LIVE commentary of Chelsea v Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-final second leg. My name is Tom Marshall-Bailey and I will be bringing you all the latest updates from Stamford Bridge this evening.
  •
Chelsea make two changes to their lineup for tonight's crunch clash as they look to overturn a 3-1 first leg deficit as Frank Lampard and Samuel Eto'o come in for the suspended Ramires and Andre Schurrle.
  •
PSG make just the one change to their starting lineup and it's an enforced one as Zlatan Ibrahimovic is out with a thigh injury sustained during last week's 3-1 win in the French capital. Edinson Cavani moves into the central striking berth while Lucas Moura comes in for the Swede on the right flank.
  •
Here are the teams in full, starting with tonight's hosts, Chelsea: Cech; Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry, Azpilicueta; Lampard, Luiz; Willian, Oscar, Hazard; Eto'o.
  •
Chelsea Substitutes: Schwarzer, Cole, Torres, Mikel, Schurrle, Ba, Kalas.
  •
PSG: Sirigu; Jallet, Thiago Silva, Alex, Maxwell; Verratti, Motta, Matuidi; Lucas, Cavani, Lavezzi.
  •
PSG Substitutes: Douchez, Cabaye, Marquinhos, Menez, Digne, Van der Wiel, Pastore.
  •
A place in the final four is up for grabs this time around but Javier Pastore's late goal in the Parc des Princes six days ago has put the Ligue 1 outfit firmly in the driving seat heading into the second leg.
  •
Without Ibrahimovic in the starting XI, however, Mourinho may fancy his chances slightly more than he would have had the Swede started. His optimism may be slightly dampened however by his lengthy list of absences.
  •
Samuel Eto'o's hurried return from a hamstring injury underlines his desperation this evening, with Fernando Torres simply not trusted at the apex of the Chelsea attack, while Ramires' suspension is coupled by the absences of Nemanja Matic and Mohamed Salah due to ineligibility.
  • 1'

We are underway here at Stamford Bridge.
  • 3'

Chelsea attack straight from the off, with Oscar forcing a throw on the far side but the French side show their attacking intent too with Lucas Moura forcing Cesar Azpilicueta into an error.
  • 5'

Ezequiel Lavezzi - who scored the opening goal of the first leg - robs Eden Hazard of possession too easily and tries to feed Christophe Jallet down the right but Azpilicueta atones for his earlier error by shepherding the ball out for a goal-kick.
  • 7'

Hazard wins a free-kick after a foul from former Chelsea defender Alex but Lampard's delivery from the left-hand side of the penalty area fails to beat the first man and PSG almost break but Blaise Matuidi's ball for Maxwell is slightly too weak and Branislav Ivanovic clears. Lampard is then penalised for hacking down Lucas after giving the ball away.
  • 9'

CLOSE! Eto'o, returning to the starting lineup, is unable to get a proper shot away in the end and, under the attentions of Thiago Silva and Alex, can only prod wide, but it goes for a corner, which Ivanovic cannot quite meet.
  • 11'

PSG are posing a constant threat on the counter but Chelsea are equally providing enough problems for the French side's rearguard and see a shot blocked when Hazard picks out Lampard on the edge of the box.
  • 13'

John Terry is caught out of position momentarily after surging downfield and Eto'o elects to take on his man but is caught out. David Luiz fills in for his central defender though and the PSG attack is eventually nullified.
  • 15'

Eto'o almost catches out a slack Salvatore Sirigu after Marco Verratti's risky backpass but is penalised for barging the keeper to the ground before Luiz wastes a chance to free Ivanovic on the far side.
  • 17'

Hazard appears as if he is struggling and he will be replaced by Schurrle, who has spent the last five minutes warming up.
  • 18'

    A. Schürrle enters play, replacing E. Hazard.
  • 19'

Schurrle comes on for the crestfallen Hazard and immediately looks to make an impact, hugging the touchline much in the same manner as the Belgian did during his brief cameo on the field.
  • 21'

Luiz tries to launch an attack but is forced into a backpass by Cavani and the home side are struggling to get into any sort of groove here.
  • 23'

Lucas makes a penetrating run at the heart of the Chelsea defence but is closed down quickly by Willian. The Chelsea man launches himself into a challenge but is too late and catches his compatriot 25 yards from goal, earning a yellow card and giving PSG a free kick in a dangerous position.
  • 24'

Willian goes into the referee's book.
  • 25'

Cavani is the man who takes on responsibility for the free kick but he drills it straight into the Chelsea wall. With such an array of talent on the pitch, Laurent Blanc would surely have hoped for better there.
  • 27'

Oscar skips away from Verratti in the corner on the near side and the Italian hauls him to ground to stop him from entering the penalty area. The referee awards Cheslea a free kick, and takes the Italian's name for his book.
  • 27'

    M. Verratti gets yellow.
  • 28'

WHAT A SAVE!! Lampard hits the free kick and it takes a deflection off of the wall, diverting it towards the near post. Sirigu readjusts quickly before diving to his right to parry the effort behind for a corner kick.
  • 30'

Eto'o unleashes a shot from just outside the area but it deflects up into the air and kindly in the direction of Sirigu, who claims with ease before Oscar can get to the loose ball.
  • 32'

GOAL! Chelsea lead and halve PSG's advantage in this tie in the process as substitute Schurrle tucks home with a composed finish. A corner in from the right flank was flicked on by Luiz and it fell perfectly for the German to slot home on the volley. The Blues are half-way there.
  • 32'

    Assist by David Luiz.
  • 34'

PENALTY?! Schurrle goes down in the penalty area under a challenge from the already-booked Verratti, but referee Pedro Proenca is unmoved and tells the German to get to his feet.
  • 36'

WHAT A CHANCE! Gary Cahill misses a sitter to give Chelsea a two-goal lead! Jallet initially upends the advancing Oscar, who had made good inroads into the PSG half and wins a free kick for his side. Lampard sends in the set piece and, after a couple of ricochets, it falls to Cahill, but the defender lashes over.
  • 38'

Thiago Silva makes a stunning challenge to deny Eto'o from going clean through on goal but hurts himself in the process to deny the Cameroonian, who had nutmegged Alex in the build-up to the tackle.
  • 40'

The PSG defender looked to be struggling but it seems as if he will be okay to continue. Matuidi is fended off by Luiz, who wins a free-kick, but is thwarted in his attempts to take it quickly by Cavani, who is cautioned for standing too close and wil be out of the semi-final first leg should the Parisiens progress.
  • 40'

    E. Cavani goes into the referee's book.
  • 41'

    F. Lampard goes into the referee's book.
  • 42'

Lampard is the latest to enter the book after a rash challenge to bring down the onrushing Lavezzi before the Argentine returns the favour on Lampard's team-mate Ivanovic.
  • 44'

PSG work the ball nicely from left to right but Willian tracks back impressively to block Jallet's cross. From the throw-in, Chelsea are able to regain possession and break at pace, but Schurrle wastes the opportunity by running into a cul-de-sac.
  •
HALF-TIME: Chelsea 1-0 PSG. The Blues are half-way to achieving their objective for the evening after substitute Schurrle's goal around the half-hour mark handed them a crucial lead. He had replaced the injured Hazard but has been lively since coming on and tucked home from a corner brilliantly to reduce the aggregate arrears to just one goal. Gary Cahill squandered a great chance but it is finely poised ahead of the second half.
  • 46'

We are back underway here as PSG get the ball rolling once again.
  • 48'

Willian is hauled down by Matuidi and Lampard delivers the subsequent free-kick into the area from a deep position out wide, but PSG are able to clear their lines with ease in the end.
  • 50'

Two questionable calls from referee Proenca as he firstly deems Lavezzi to have gone down too easily under Luiz's challenge. Just moments later the official considers Lucas' theatrical efforts to get out the way of Terry's outstretched leg equally not worthy of a foul.
  • 52'

CROSSBAR! Schurrle goes within inches of the crucial second goal as he rifles a stunning effort against the face of Sirigu's goalframe after Willian had done brilliantly to reach the ball and cut it back to the German. So, so agonisingly close.
  • 52'

    Lucas receives a yellow card.
  • 54'

CROSSBAR AGAIN! Oscar hits the bar just moments after Schurrle's strike as his free-kick, awarded for a foul on Eto'o by Lucas, who is cautioned, just outside the penalty area, dips over the wall and against the upright. So unlucky for the home side.
  • 55'

    M. Verratti is done for the day. Y. Cabaye is his replacement.
  • 55'

    B. Ivanović receives a yellow card.
  • 56'

Ivanovic is the latest player to enter card-happy Proenca's book as he hauls down Matuidi after the Frenchman had stolen half a yard on the Serb. The visitors, clearly rattled by Chelsea's two efforts against the crossbar, react by bringing on former Newcastle United midfielder Yohan Cabaye for Verratti.
  • 58'

WHAT A SAVE: Petr Cech gets across brilliantly to tip away Lavezzi's fizzing free-kick, which seemed destined to nestle in the top corner until the Blues stalwart reached out to paw it away. From two ensuing corners, Cabaye volleyed hamlessly over the crossbar before Cavani's near-post header goes out for a goal kick.
  • 60'

Willian attempts an over-ambitious ball out to the far side to find fellow Brazilian Oscar but the pass is too heavy and sails out for a goal-kick, despite the playmaker's best efforts.
  • 62'

Terry looks to be struggling after going out to meet Lucas and clear the ball. Cavani, who has been poor throughout, decides to step over the ball from the next PSG attacking foray but there is no-one there to meet it.
  • 64'

Chelsea win a corner after Cahill's low strike deflects away from goal but the resulting set piece is punched away by Sirigu and PSG threaten a breakaway but, after Lucas had threatened to sprint past Azpilicueta, Cech shows a cool head to pass the ball out to Terry and set the Blues away once more.
  • 66'

Lampard is the man to make way at the three-quarter stage of the match and, interestingly, it is Demba Ba who comes on in his place and not Fernando Torres as Mourinho seeks to add some more firepower to his side.
  • 66'

    D. Ba enters play, replacing F. Lampard.
  • 68'

CLOSE! Ba almost has an instant impact as he flicks on a long ball to Schurrle, but the German is unable to get a meaningful shot away and Sirigu saves easily. Schurrle had shown good awareness to latch onto the striker's header by running off of the slack Maxwell.
  • 70'

Oscar does brilliantly to keep a diagonal ball in play but, having committed a defender, his cross into the area is a poor one as he looked to find Ba and Sirigu claims with the minimum of fuss.
  • 72'

Laurent Blanc shuffles his pack once more by introducing Javier Pastore for Lavezzi, who has worked tirelessly this evening. Cavani sprints clear onto Matuidi's raking pass, meanwhile, but lashes a first-time effort over Cech's crossbar.
  • 73'

    J. Pastore enters play, replacing E. Lavezzi.
  • 74'

Oscar whips a teasing ball in towards the back post but neither Ba nor Schurrle are able to profit from it as it swings away for a goal-kick on the far side.
  • 76'

MISS! Chelsea give the ball away sloppily in midfield and Pastore bursts into the gap vacated by the Blues midfielders to clip a ball over the top for Cavani but Ivanovic gets back well to head the ball away. It is only as far as Maxwell, however, who slides the ball just wide of the far post.
  • 78'

WHAT A MISS! Cavani has the chance to put the game to bed after Cabaye picks him out with a stunning long pass but the Uruguayan's finish is shocking as he contrives to drive over the bar when he ought to have, at least, hit the target.
  • 79'

Maxwell is cautioned by the referee.
  • 80'

Schurrle wins a free-kick after flicking the ball beyond Maxwell, who is booked for a foul but the free-kick in only leads to a PSG counter, with Lucas firing an effort straight at Cech at the end of it all.
  • 81'

Oscar is replaced with Fernando Torres.
  • 82'

The tension is rising inside Stamford Bridge and understandably so as the next goal will prove crucial towards establishing who will go through to the last four. Torres is on belatedly for Oscar as Mourinho desperately seeks the goal that will see his side progress on away goals.
  • 82'

David Luiz receives a yellow card.
  • 84'

Blanc's intentions are to bolster his defensive ranks and you can understand his need to take off the more attack-minded Lucas to bring on the young defender Marquinhos.
  • 84'

Lucas is done for the day. Marquinhos is his replacement.
  • 86'

FOUL?! Ba is penalised after Terry had flicked on Azpilicueta's long throw for what looked to be a foul on Jallet as Sirigu struggled to come for the ball. It looked contentious but Chelsea are thwarted once again.
  • 87'

GOAL! Is that the goal that sends Chelsea through to the last four of the Champions League? It's another substitute who finds the net as Ba steers home Azpilicueta's snap shot to send Stamford Bridge into delirium. Cahill's long ball into the area is not dealt with and the Spaniard's hooked effort across goal finds an onside Ba, who gets in front of Maxwell to prod the ball into the roof of the net. Chelsea are minutes away from the semis.
  • 89'

PSG launch their riposte but Jallet's hopeful cross finds an offside Cavani, who cannot connect properly anyway, and is flagged for his premature run.
  • 90'
    (+1)

The visitors continue to loft hopeful balls into the area, with Alex the latest to try his luck with a header but it is far too close to Cech, who clutches the ball gratefully.
  • 90'
    (+3)

WHAT A SAVE: Cech has somehow kept Marquinhos out with a stunning save to preseve his side's lead as he stretches out a hand to tip away the youngster's near-post strike after Motta and Maxwell had worked space neatly down the right. The Blues are just moments away from securing a semi-final berth...
  •
FULL-TIME: Chelsea 2-0 PSG. They've done it, the Blues are in the final four after a stunning finale at Stamford Bridge. Goals from substitutes Andre Schurrle and Demba Ba saw the Blues through on the away goals rule to keep their light burning bright in this year's Champions League as Jose Mourinho kept up his impressive record of having never lost a quarter-final in this competition. Schurrle handed his side the lead in the first half with a neat strike from a corner but it looked as if they would not find a second until Ba somehow steered home on the stretch at the death to send Stamford Bridge into raptures. The semi-finals beckon.
