Dalglish warning over Liverpool youth

A cat runs past Kenny Dalglish, Liverpool v Tottenham Hotspur, Barclays Premier League, Anfield, February 6, 2012

Kenny Dalglish is not giving up on fourth place

Kenny Dalglish has insisted Liverpool have not thrown in the towel in the chase for fourth place and will only let the kids off the leash when he feels the time is right.

The Reds are 12 points adrift of fourth-placed Tottenham, but it would be a nine-point gap if they had not let a two-goal lead slip in a 3-2 loss to Queens Park Rangers.

With Reds teenager Raheem Sterling being linked with a move away from Anfield, seemingly frustrated by a lack of game time, it has been suggested that Dalglish may blood youth with an eye to next season.

Dalglish is prepared to give youth a chance, but will do so when he and the club feel the time is right. He said: "If you are saying fourth place is gone it would be yeah [to play the youngsters], but we are not thinking that way. We will keep playing as we have before and keep playing and getting as much as we can.

"If we have to play the kids we will play the kids, it is not a problem. There comes a time when you have to take the nappies off them and see if they have got it.

"If we have to do that we will do it but at all times the most important thing for us is to maintain the thought that we are protecting them for our and their benefit.

"People can shout and bawl about young kids doing well and of course they are doing well. But they have done well because they have come here and been looked after in the management and guidance they have had.

"Just trust us to guide them through if they are going to get to the next step and if they are good enough to get there."

Reflecting on Liverpool's loss to QPR, Dalglish said: "Form is different to results. The performance the other night was excellent for 77 minutes and then we lost three goals.

"For us, we were delighted with the way we played. We will try and remain as positive as we can, but also realistic. We know what we are capable of but we have to finish it off."

I don't think now is the time to experiment with youth, it's a crucial part of the season with only 9 games to go, Kenny should stick with experience and play his senior players and 1st teamers.

I think pre-season and the League Cup and the early stages of the FA Cup are the best times to develop and give young players some valuable experience.

John,, almost any other time and I would agree with you BUT.... if Sterling was put into the team right now he is not going to replace a proven goal scorer is he.

Why not a least put the lad on the bench, who knows he may be able to come on and change a game, its seems to me that we have not got much to lose.

The kid needs to be told to keep his gob shut though.

how indecisive can you get? good cup team but 4th place is so optomistic with the present choices of squad and maybe the youth players will bring competition within and therefore getting the elder players t o play for their space in the squad. Aint going anywhere this season out of the leauge so this is the time as next season be too scared to introduce them at the start and ending up worse off next season

FIRSTLY; Get Well Soon Sarah, I wish you well.

Your comment Sarah about KD saying Liverpool are not giving up;

Well, in all honesty, to say we give up means it doesn't matter if we win or lose so NO manager ever gives up, they just keep doing their job and at the end see what the amount of points are.

In KD the great pragmatist, you get exactly what it says on the tin. This is good for being sensible but rubbish for getting the fans up, i suppose it's mourinho or dalglish - the two furthest opposites.

I really don't believe Dalglish though Liverpool were good enough for CL football next year, there's still so much work to do to make the team a truly winning team rather than just a lucky team.

John Tucco - I totally agree with you! If we have top quality wingers that were shipping in goals and assists every game then you could understand not throwing him in. This however is not the case. Downing has been doing okay of late, Henderson is just terrible (harsh but true), Kuyt and Bellamy are both good but not exactly on blistering form. I would play Sterling on the left and Downing on the right for the remainder of the season. The lad has blistering pace, he is skillful and has an eye for goal. Give him a chance Kenny! Lets face it, the top four isn't going to happen this season! We are already in Europe next year. So does it matter if we give the youngsters a chance and drop points. We now have the FA cup to play for and that is it so lets use the last league matches to create something positive.
