Di Matteo hails team effort

Roberto Di Matteo praised his Chelsea team after the victory over Newcastle

Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo believes all of his players deserve credit for the club's unbeaten start to the new season despite Eden Hazard once again grabbing the headlines in a 2-0 win at home to Newcastle.

The Blues returned to the top of the Barclays Premier League thanks to a third win in a week. Summer signing Hazard opened the scoring from the penalty spot and then provided an assist for Fernando Torres to seal the points in first-half stoppage time.

The Belgium international has been central to the wins over Newcastle, Reading and Wigan and Torres has started to look more like the £50million man brought in from Liverpool in January 2011, but said: "It's not just them two, they have a good link-up with (Juan) Mata and the other midfield players."

He added: "Thanks to the team he (Hazard) has been able to slide in and play very comfortably with the others.

"I know you focus on the goalscorers but I think it was a good performance considering it was our third game in six days. The demand was high playing against tough opposition today."

Torres, 28, was brought down for the penalty and scored a tremendous goal from the edge of the box and Di Matteo is pleased that he has started to add goals to his game once more.

"He was very important for us last season, maybe not scoring as much but providing and working hard for the team," he said. "He is a great team player as well but it is great to see him scoring and the second goal I think was terrific play from us."

Di Matteo was without captain John Terry due to a neck injury and the Italian was therefore forced to named a third different central-defensive partnership in succession, but he was pleased with the efforts of David Luiz and Gary Cahill and the defensive performance as a whole.

"That was important today," he said.

"I thought we controlled their threat very well, we didn't concede much to them because if you give space and time to (Demba) Ba, (Papiss) Cisse, (Hatem) Ben Arfa or (Yohan) Cabaye they can hurt you."

@thomas they all play the same games come the end of the season so whats your point ? as for the game im a Newcastle fan and we were totally outplayed for 90 minutes and Chelsea new boy Hazard is one hell of a purchase hes been there how long and yet has settled straight in and the "player passed his best" as many so called expert said, Torres is showing signs if a few seasons ago maybe hes over the 50 million price tag so god help most teams in the premier league this season i think they will push in all competitions and the league as well as entertain anyone watching

SKY fix, idiot, it was ESPN. Chelsea didn't moan when they had the same type of fixture list last season. It's not right when it's anyone other than Chelsea.

The Hazard show! Chelsea have had a few good results to start the season and thought Newcastle might of proved a greater threat but it seems last season they overperformed. There is no fix and clubs play at different times/days and we all have to play the same teams in the end but am interested to see how they do against a fellow top 6 team.

Trust "Mr. Williams" to suggest a fix every time Chelsea win. This is one regular half wit on any Chelsea thread these days.

Hazard is winning the games for them, interesting to see how Chelsea do when he is out of the first team. No matter what manger you have Chelsea will almost always be strong defensively and will look to convert some chances that come there way, the real challenge for them will come against the bigger teams and will see how they play with different tactics and are up against when they go sown 1-0 2-0 this is something villas boas couldn't do and di matteo will know the English well and will adjust to this.
I am not a Chelsea supporter, furthermore I think Chelsea lack physical presence with all the diddy men they have. However, it was great to see Torres getting back to form. Torres gave my club Liverpool some very good years, and I think its good to see this class player  coming back to form.

Well done RDM, another 3points. It doesn't matter who you play, you still have to beat the 11 men in front of you. In the premiership its not unusual for a so called lesser team to trip up one of the big teams. At least so far Chelsea have not been complacent and have done what neede to be done.

Blue and true !!

We played 3 games in a week, how is that a fix? . sour grapes and all that eh.

Tim, Newcastle finished 5th, above Chelsea, last year. What do you consider a fellow top 6 team?

So the SKY fix is on again this time with Chelsea and not United which has resulted in three cushy fixtures and three cushy wins. Had they played two games they would be trailing in the wake of Swansea. At the same time City ( why do we allways play on Sunday) have to date played but one game.

I agree with Thomas Kennedy, playing on a Sunday or a Saturday makes a lot of difference.  Playing in the evening is also different. Some clubs will get better weather. You will never get a level playing field with the corrupt FA and sky calling the shots.
