England call-up for Campbell

Fraizer Campbell strides forward, Sunderland v Manchester City, Premier League, Stadium of Light, August 29, 2010

Fraizer Campbell has been named in Stuart Pearce's squad to face Netherlands

Fraizer Campbell has earned his first England call-up after being named in Stuart Pearce's squad to face Netherlands next week.

The Sunderland striker has endured a host of injuries since his move from Manchester United in 2009, but has been named as one of five strikers in a youthful 25-man squad for the friendly at Wembley on February 29.

He made just three Premier League starts for the Black Cats last season following a serious knee injury, but has impressed since making his return in January.

United midfielder Tom Cleverley is the only other uncapped player, while there were recalls for Manchester City defender Micah Richards and Robert Green.

Liverpool's Steven Gerrard, back in the England squad for the first time in over a year, is expected to captain the side, but veterans Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard have not been selected.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been in impressive form for Arsenal, but the former Southampton winger misses out on a place, while Gunners team-mate Theo Walcott is in the squad.

England squad to face Netherlands: Scott Carson, Joe Hart, Robert Green; Leighton Baines, Gary Cahill, Ashley Cole, Glen Johnson, Phil Jones, Micah Richards, Chris Smalling, Kyle Walker; Gareth Barry, Tom Cleverley, Stewart Downing, Steven Gerrard, Adam Johnson, James Milner, Scott Parker, Theo Walcott, Ashley Young; Darren Bent, Fraizer Campbell, Daniel Sturridge, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck

Should've got Harry in before Capello. If it wasn't for a court case based on a knob head reporters dodgy kidology phone calls then we would've probably had a manager that could've got the players going. As he's said on numerous occasions it's only 10% tactical and 90% down to the players. look at last tournament and also chelski! bit too much of a coincidence that player power was at a high/ or so they thought. Crap results always follow... That's probably the main real reason to start going with the youth in a big way. As everyone always says, you need a blend of youth AND experience but the old hands are just starting to get past their best and possibly going to be a liability now with terry and rio especially.

Good luck to Pearce, he probably is on for a hiding either way as anyone in the hot seat will be.

Even if we do go with a young side against a good team the media won't think anyone is interested in reading something positive, win, lose or draw! so they'll probably think of some crap to write and half the mugs that read it will probably buy into it! The joys of the GREAT BRITISH MEDIA! If it isn't positive, they don't think it's news worthy.

Enloy the game!!!

@ a h.. No one can be that supid. I'd like to point out that the name before Keane is 'William', not 'Robbie'. If you are attempting to troll me, then well done. But if you genuinely are that stupid. Get back on your medication.

@ross paterson.. William Keane. He was born 11th Jan 1993 and plays for united as a forward. You can look it up if you don't believe me. He can play for England if he wants to. Did that go the way you wanted? Nope. I don't think so.

that one buddy, go tel ya lies elsewhere, no need to belitle you, you manage that by yourself

you really are a sad git with nothing better to do!!!

@ a h (uk buyer) When did I say that Robbie Keane was born in 1993?

Instead of trying to make smart comments in an attempt to belittle people and then like your own posts to make it look like you're popular. Have you tried doing something better with your time? If they were genuinely funny, or correct then people might appreciate them. But alas, they are not.

Let Pearce play his selection before we start criticising there is always a player someone doesnt rate

so he is not going to please everyone in England with his selection.

Let Pearce take the reigns for a year then decide on a new england boss if one is needed i say.

Hart

  Cahill  Lescot
Glen Johnson  Cole

Jones

Milner Parker Downing

Gerrad
Bent

I'd try this team out if i was the new coach. Glen johnson cant defend but is excellent at going forward! Jones is solid can clear up and cover ground in that position. Parker can hold the ball. milner will run and work hard. Ok downing isnt the best but he can deliver the ball into gerrad who can then feed bent. Bent will score he's a good centre foward! This is a team no individuals remember gerrad is a team player!! Something simple like this is needed!

@ Michael if  Keane was born in 1993 that makes him 19 this year with a playing career of 14 yrs professionally,....he started at the age of 5 did he?????? if you are going to contradict people, then i suggest you get your facts 100% correct or you end up looking like a numptyhead, duh!

People are judging Pearce's squad selection before he's even managed a single game for us. Ya know, it's true when people saying selecting a squad isn't just about picking the big names, but its also not just about picking the in-form players. You need to pick players that will fit with your tactical plans and can form partnerships with one another, and that's something previous managers have failed to do. In years gone by, the likes of Gerrard and Lampard, and Terry and Ferdinand have not only been some of the biggest names, but a lot of the time some of the most in form players, yet their playing styles and personalities have never complimented one another and they have been unable to form successful partnerships which has been our major downfall in recent times. Rather than looking at names individually, look at potential combinations within this squad that could blossom and provide a very bright future. Stuart Pearce is not a moron and every single player that has been named in this squad is there for a reason. The same goes for the players not selected, there will be a reason for many of those omitted too and may be as simple as being motivation for players to work harder to prove themselves. Admittedly, there may be some younger players I wish would be picked but haven't but as I said, he's not even managed a single game for us yet so give him a bleeding chance to show what he's doing before you start criticising. As the saying goes, Damned if you do, Damned if you don't. Especially when you are in England and have pathetic journalists and little over-reacting kids on message boards making a meal out of everything.

@MICHAEL

Brilliant job, you've just proved what I've always suspected, that a good percentage of the people who comment on MSN are complete idiots!

avatar
Why on earth is rooney picked? his performances have been low par at the very least, he is likely to get sent off, and puts us at risk of playing with ten men, he is a bloody liablity, and commenting on Downing, he has performed well for england, so Neil drury needs to take his head out of the sand and assess his Englands performance, i guess hes a Man U fan and that sumes up his contradiction... rose coloured specs from watching the wannabe prima donna's at Old Trafford, Gerard for captain most certainly, thank god Rio and Lamps are out both are over the hill

Using Germany's formation, a starting 11 something like this for the summer seemed the best option, get rid of all the disruptive players (Terry, Ashley Cole, Rooney) and tell the media to **** off. If we have a regular starting line-up it could install some pride and continuity that England need at the moment.

Playing Gerrard (who was one of the only players who actually played well at the World Cup for us) in his position, and let the players just do whatever they want, play to their strengths.

Cahill - useless, been out performed by Steven Taylor by a mile this season
Jones - see above
Rooney - never done it for England and never will

We need to stop hyping players like Campbell, Smalling, Cleverley and Welbeck up and actually look at who can do it for England. Maybe one day one of these players might be able to do it for England, but they're so far off it now.

Just out of interest how many of the squad chosen by pearce would Harry Redknapp go with?
personally,I would think at least five must be relieved that Harry is not at the helm just yet,So their uneventful England careers continue at least for one more boring game.We have always carried a "has been" in the team but this famous five will be known as "never has beens". Harry........
If you decide to leave the lane(please do not) will you rid us of the cart horses that pulled on the three lions shirt under that over paid under achiever Chaplin ooops I mean Capello. COYS

just get rid of 80% of this team, they have done nothing in the last 3 tournaments but embarrass a proud nation. time for the next generation

We have over the years had a number of Michaels as English manager. I fear that when I read the selected England squad we have yet another, to name but one Darren Bent, every time I have seen him play I just cannot make out how he is playing in the Prem league. Perhaps someone out there can enlighten me as to how he has been picked then maybe I can lump all the others like him that I have seen play. I can't remember which match it was but Bent hadn't touched the ball any more than 3 times.
