FA won't sack Capello over Terry comments

Fabio Capello and John Terry lead out the team before their England training session, Wembley Stadium, November 11, 2011

Fabio Capello believed John Terry should not have lost the England captaincy

Fabio Capello will not be sacked for having the courage to publicly reprimand the Football Association for stripping John Terry of the captaincy, according to ESPNsoccernet sources.

Capello stated that he disagreed with the standing-down of Terry as skipper, which came as a result of the defender's charge for racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand. Terry strongly denies the charge, and his trial date has been set for after Euro 2012.

Club England, the FA sub-section that looks after the national team, is meeting this week, and the matter is set to be high on its agenda.

Capello will also be back from his break in Italy and will have an opportunity to explain the circumstances of the interview. But it is not believed to be a sacking offence, and as one FA insider joked: "Everybody else disagrees with the FA, so why shouldn't the England manager?"

More seriously, ESPNsoccernet was told that the FA has not, and will not, be asking the question about Capello's position. Capello, in fact, has publicly stated nothing more than he had already told the FA when consulted on the issue of the England captain's position.

Capello made it clear to the FA that he believes "everybody is innocent until proven guilty", and therefore Terry should not be stripped of the captaincy.

The first time the Chelsea captain was sacked as England captain, it was Capello who took the decision and he took it to relieve the pressure on his best centre-back, rather than punish him for the problems his private life would cause in the dressing room. On this occasion Capello expressed his support for Terry because his only motive is to put out the best possible team in the European Championship and has no interest in the politics of English football.

"Fabio told the FA that he did not want John Terry stripped of the captaincy because he wants the best team and believes JT is the best leader on the pitch, that he is the best captain," said a source close to Capello. "However, he understands that it is for the FA to decide, but his feeling is quite straightforward - everybody is innocent until proven guilty, and if guilty then that is a different matter and someone can be punished."

Capello has never believed in the importance that is placed on the England captaincy. He has remained unbowed by press pressure throughout his reign and with a maximum of five months more in the job is unlikely to change that now.

"Fabio's selections are always based on one thing, and one thing only, for the good of the team," continued the source. "He wants to win in the European Championship and to do that he needs his best players, his best team."

Terry was reinstated as captain in March 2011, having lost it ahead of the 2010 World Cup, where Steven Gerrard led the team as a stand-in, once Rio Ferdinand had succumbed to injury ahead of the tournament. Terry's presence in the England camp was said to be disruptive but instead of choosing to not pick the Chelsea captain, Capello then reinstated him once Ferdinand's injuries began to lessen his availability.

In the meantime, Capello will not be quitting ahead of his last assignment as national coach of his adopted country.

Evra and co are rubbing their hands with glee at what they have stirred up, wonder who they got  next to pull the race card   they dont really need anymore , they got the result , Terry lost the captains job , don't take a brain surgeon to work out how and why...

I just read the opinion from Danny Clarke (ZULU) You slate JT for cheating with a team mates ex Girl friend. Didn't Rio cheat on his wife? Didn't Rio get suspended for not showing for a drug test. Now why wouldn't you show for  a drug test? Zulu you are suggesting Rio gets the captaincy only for the colour of his skin. So I'm just going to bring to the forefront of what every other poster knows. It's you who are the hypocrite,it's you who is a racist and it's your type that makes this planet a little more difficult to live on for decent people.

If the team does badly it's the manager who's job is on the line. Since he can't go on the pitch with the team the captain is his representative out there, so it should be the manager's decision who wears the armband, not the FA. If the team bomb out of the Euros nobody at the FA is going to get the sack!

Quite right relieving JT of the armband, what they need to do is instantly re-instate Rio Ferdinand, championing the injustice of racism in the sport, championing the case of sexism in the sport(keys+gray over the female linesman).....Sorry that would be the same Rio that missed a drug test to go shopping and was splashed all over the News of the World with his mates in an allegedly spit roasting incident, the same Rio thats been in court recently over his numerous affairs that he didn't want bringing to the publics attention !!

At this present moment in time terry is innocent unlike "i've woke up with a bad taste in my mouth(ferdinand)

i'm NOT a chelsea fan but what happened to innocent til proven guilty, he should keep the captaincy til proven otherwise, better to have had the trial before the Euros, then who could complain then if proven, then kick him out of the England squad permanently if it went against him>

I feel sorry for Capello, what he said was completely mistranslated and has left another shadow over him. All morning Talksport were fabricating stories that Capello had said that terry was still his captain and they were calling for his resignation. Capello qualifies us for tournaments. Before Capello it was hit and miss. Our problem is Terry and Ferdinand do not like each other.

i've been trying to post on this subject all day...****?can terry really remain as captain while the F.A have this 'kick it out' campaign?not really....should cappello really have gone blabbing on ITALIAN  t.v. like some spoilt child?erm...no.thought he had more dignity/professionalism than to air his dirty laundry in public and he hasn't really helped the situation has he?i smell an apology from cappello.whats the point of sacking him now and having to pay compensation, remember sven, who was on Sh!t loads for NOT being engalnd's manager.why do people always turn this subject into some kind of race war...it's so boring...please stick to the subject.if terry was a true professional and cared about the team more than his own ego he would step aside and pull out of the euros until this mess was sorted out.then maybe we could all move forward by leaving him behind....if i remember correctly he was hardly the best of a bad bunch at the last world cup...was he?
