Five-star England cruise to victory

England's Wayne Rooney, centre, celebrates scoring his second and his side's third goal

Two-goal Wayne Rooney moved up to fifth spot in England's all-time scoring lists as Roy Hodgson's side overpowered minnows San Marino 5-0 in World Cup qualifying Group H at Wembley.

Stand-in skipper Rooney took his tally for his county to 31 and moved ahead of Alan Shearer, Tom Finney and Nat Lofthouse. Danny Welbeck also netted twice before Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain completed England's nap hand with his first senior international goal.

The result took England three points clear at the top of Group H and in good heart for Tuesday's crucial trip to Poland, even though Theo Walcott must be rated as extremely doubtful after being forced off inside the opening five minutes.

Wave after wave of England attacks. The world's joint-worst side having a gameplan no more elaborate than desperate defence. San Marino had to be beaten though. And it took England half an hour to work out how.

It was difficult to be too critical of England given the limitations of their opponents provided so little space to operate in. But their passing wasn't as crisp as it needed to be in order to open San Marino up and when the opener came, it was something of a surprise as Welbeck charged into the box and was upended by Aldo Simoncini.

Rooney had no hesitation in accepting even more responsibility and duly drove home the spot-kick.

Within three minutes, England had another. When Welbeck acrobatically turned home the winner against Sweden during Euro 2012, some questioned whether he meant it. The impudent manner in which the 21-year-old turned home Aaron Lennon's cross, from a very similar position, left no room for debate.

After the break, Lennon was about to get a free-kick when Rooney fired home from the edge of the area, a landmark goal which means he has only four more men to overtake and become England's greatest marksman.

Yet again, Welbeck followed up almost instantly. Once more at the near post, this time Tom Cleverley providing the cross which he prodded home from close range.

Hodgson had seen enough to get Rooney off in readiness for Tuesday's more testing assignment with Poland in Warsaw. It meant he was only watching when Oxlade-Chamberlain made his own little bit of history 14 minutes from time, tucking himself behind Tommy Lawton, Michael Owen, and England's youngest goalscorer of all, Rooney.

Big Deal! They beat minnows St Marino and they think they are on their way to win the tournament. How shallow can they be only they know. Lets wait for the big guns like germany, Italy, Spain Brazil and then will find out  how bad they are.

5-0 lol. Germany beat ROI 6-1 away from home. I makes me laugh when we give such praise for such tripe. Even the BBC were banging on about it and being boring, 'oh San Marino, only string 3 passes together, not attacking much, bla bla bla", they are freaking bunch of part time farmers and a team of supposed pros earning mega bucks can only managed 5. Joke. 3 points only positive.

"Rooney took his tally for his county(sic) to 31 and moved ahead of Alan Shearer, Tom Finney and Nat Lofthouse".

Did they mention that Nat Lofthouse scored 30 goals in 33 games? No...didn't think so.

Well done England. 5 -0 is a good win whoever you play. It could be worse you know - you could be a Scotsman like me and see your team get stuffed by the Welsh, like I did tonight :o(    Good on the Wales team (Gareth Bale in particular), they outplayed us mob - and good on the England team too. Best of luck to you all - may you progress further and do even better. Meanwhile  - I'm cancelling my ticket to Rio.

We won 5-0 but with opposition of german class we will not win an egg cup. It does not seem to matter who is England manager its the same old England.

"Come on England we won 5-0 against san marino and are gonna win the world cup"-according to most of the fans, the manager and the itv pundits!. Well as much as i want england to win the world cup, the closest cup they'll get near is when they are making TEA. Lets not get ahead of ourselves in the past couple of fixtures san marino have lost 11-0 to holland, 8-0 to finland, 8-0 to hungary, 6-0 to sweden and the previous game 6-0 to montenegro. Whereas we only won 5-0 of which one was a penalty. So if england could win the world cup based on this result, then finland, hungary, sweden and montenegro have a better chance than us.
