Johnson - England worthy of respect
Glen Johnson (centre) says England deserve credit for doing well at Euro 2012
Glen Johnson has suggested England deserve more respect for their European Championship exploits.
Roy Hodgson's men defied the doubters to win their group in Poland and Ukraine and set up a quarter-final against Italy on Sunday. England have flourished despite going into the tournament having trained only a handful of times under new manager Hodgson.
Asked if they warranted more respect from their critics, Liverpool full-back Johnson said: "Yeah, I guess so. But, inside the camp, no-one thinks like that. It's only people outside the camp. So, it's not really important."
Johnson has had more than his fair share of doubters at both club and international level. Yet, despite right-back having been arguably the most fiercely-contested position in the team for the past two years, he has once again made it his own when it matters most.
The 27-year-old said it was down to others to judge whether he was now the undisputed first choice.
But he added: "I played all the games in the World Cup, I played the majority of the games from then to now. I've played all the games here, so I'd have to be in contention, wouldn't I? Every player wants to have a run in any side they play in.
"No-one wants to come in for one game then not play for a few months and come in for another. If you're going to play, you want to play almost every possible opportunity."
Johnson is one of two Liverpool players certain to start against Italy, the other being captain Steven Gerrard.
"Steven has been a fantastic player for many, many years," Johnson said. "But, with the armband, I think he feels he needs to step up just that tiny bit more, and I think he's done it more than anyone so far."
England will run out in Kiev on Sunday aiming to reach the semi-finals of a major tournament for the first time in 16 years.

To be honest I think theyve already pretty much met or exceeded expectations so far and who knows maybe they can beat Italy.
Good luck to England come on people get behind them and wish them well !
" Asked if they warranted more respect from their critics....."
He didn't say it, he was asked a closed question ;"Do you think....?"
You say "No" you look a wimp. You say "yes" and you'll be accused of being bigheaded. Just another journalist writing their own words into a story.
That said, being underestimated is no bad thing. It gives you the potential for creating a surprise before your opponents have settled, so if that's the way it is , Great. Get out of the traps early, and who knows what might happen.
When you read the article, you realise that Johnson didn't say what the headline claims! The journalist gives him a loaded question and builds a whole story around it. The standard of journalism is at its lowest ebb in decades, if there's no news then they make it up. Spitting Image used to potray journalists as pigs, perhaps a bit harsh, but they do themselves no favours. Do they really think we are all so dumb just to lap it up. We see through you, gives us some quallity!
I've not seen England play so well for years and years, let's hope they can keep their postive approach on Sunday and do a job on the Italians, go on lads!
England got through the group. So they deserve respect for that. Never rated Terry.....but he was immense in the last game. You can only beat whats put in front of you......and England have done that the last two games.

My little newphew can talk better English than you. I think you need to go back to school also i'd like to see you go out there & do better. Focking spac, jheez.
I think it is going to be tight unless Wayne or Mario lose their head.
The Italians look up for this competition, though, so we will have to play well. It's hard to compare the standards of the various groups until you reach the knock outs. Spain v France will give everyone an idea of where all the teams stand. Portugal and Germany are always going to be better than Greece and the Czechs, but it hasn't been easy comparing our group with the Italian group. If France do ok against Spain, it may just be that our performances have been better than we realised.
