The England top brass were out in force at Wembley
David Bernstein has insisted the Football Association will not rush into appointing a successor to England manager Fabio Capello, with Stuart Pearce handed caretaker control of the side for the upcoming friendly with the Netherlands on February 29.
Capello elected to resign on Wednesday in the wake of the FA's decision to remove John Terry as captain.
With just four months to the start of the European Championship, the FA needs to find a new manager to lead the team and Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp heads the bookmakers' lists.
FA chairman Bernstein has spoken of his determination to bring in the right man, but there will be no rush with the board confident in the caretaker stewardship of England Under-21 boss Pearce.
"I can announce that Stuart Pearce will manage the England team against Holland," Bernstein said. "He has huge experience outside and inside the organisation. He has been working with the Under-21 team and has been working with Fabio for some time. I have got great confidence in Stuart, we will be in good hands.
"Our priority then will be to appoint a new England manager."
Bernstein stated the preference is for an English manager to be at the helm but there will be no rush to make a permanent appointment.
He said: "We will do this as sensibly and as soon as we can."

Agree, think Capello wanted out in any case. But Terry and the FA gave him a good opportunity. Some people are suggesting that the FA sponsors were getting twitchy when the case got delayed. Terry thought he had thought of everything but he was wrong.
And this is the 3rd time that something 'Terry related' has caused a rift in the England squad, first Bridge, then his stupid interview at the last World Cup and now his decision to let this case go on for longer than it should have to try to save his skin instead of clearing it all up. He's cost the team their manager now. He should never play for England again. And learn to keep his pants on and his mouth shut.
I have seen him many times when things are not going well at club level and he hasnt got a clue how to change things around then so god help the England team with him at the helm. The so called top class players we are supposed to have cannot listen to instructions about where they ought to be playing, Gerrard is drawn like a moth to light in to the middle of the park instead of sticking to the left side as instructed. Rooney runs around like a headless chicken snarling and moaning and our goalkeepers are all of a sudden terrible and they and the defence gift goals away.
Glen Hoddle was the last manager with any new ideas and his team played good attacking football but as usual the Dinosaurs in the FA got rid of him this time the excuse was his relgious beliefs, (you couldnt make it up).
Until the Stupid gutter press get it into their heads that English football is ****** and the English players are only average on the world stage when put together as a team , then stop building them up into superstars when they are all overpaid prima donnas out to feather their own nests any England coach is on a hiding to nothing.
The England coach has got to be able to play who he wants and not who the press the Tv pundits or Alex Ferguson wants to play and when, that being said as Capello has been forced out the only man I would give the job to is Jose Mourinho at least we will qualify for competitions. Time will tell but English football is on its ****** from club level right through to International level and it is not the fault of Eriksson or Capello they will just be made scapegoats. I see only bleak times ahead should Hairy Redneck be at the helm, more wasted money paying Spurs compensation for his services and not even able to qualify for future tournaments, Time will tell
John Terry found innocent of charges
F.A look like the c**ts that they are
Here's food for thought, why didn't John Terry man up and clear his name early instead of getting the case put back to later in the summer? Because he did not want to take the chance of losing the court case and the captaincy and was happy to drag the entire squad through this nonsense because he could not think of a better way to deny making a racial remark than than the way that he did? Totally selfish. And what does he have to say now? Capello has stood down in defence of him, what does he say now? He's strangely quiet, isn't he? He was looking at a maximum £2500 fine, what was the problem, was he short of money?John Terry accused of being racist

and believe me I'm an Arsenal fan and no fan of John Terry but this is what they call food for thought
Harry Redknapp is 64 years old, has had heart surgery and so may not even be a long term choice in what is probably the most stressful job in football. O'Neill should have got the job before, as well as a lot of top jobs in football, such as the Liverpool job. How many times does this manager have to get unprecendented good results at a team that he is managing before he gets recognition? Euro final with Celtic, cup win with Leicester, Villa higher than they were for years, look at Sunderland now. And look at all those clubs after he left. He won't leave Sunderland now but I wonder how long Harry will be able to last at this level at his age.
I think the people who say 'let the fans decide' are onto something, mainly because the fans will then only have themselves to blame when it all goes wrong. Supporters who are regular spectators at matches up and down the country should be able to apply for a vote and a number should be allowed to vote on the next manager. That way, the manager will know that he has the fans behind him. In the end, we might have to admit that our players just are not as good as we make them out to be, but at least that system will ensure that everyone is in it together.
