Police probe Twitter abuse of Perch

James Perch and Liverpool goalkeeper Jose Reina clash in the penalty area, Newcastle United v Liverpool, Premier League, St James' Park, April 1, 2012

James Perch was heavily involved in Newcastle's win over Liverpool on Sunday

A police investigation has begun after another Premier League footballer was racially abused on Twitter.

Officers were contacted when Newcastle's James Perch was targeted on Sunday after a clash with Liverpool goalkeeper Jose Reina ended with the Spaniard receiving a red card during his side's 2-0 loss.

A Twitter user, believed to be a 17-year-old Liverpool fan who works at a supermarket, tweeted: "I want to punch Perch in his n***** head!"

The tweet ended by calling the Newcastle defender a c***.

Other Twitter users immediately rounded on the abuser, telling him police would be informed, and reminding the writer about what happened to student Liam Stacey, who was jailed for abusing the Bolton player Fabrice Muamba.

Stacey, 21, was jailed for 56 days after he admitted inciting racial hatred over remarks about the midfielder, who at the time was critically ill following his collapse during an FA Cup tie against Tottenham.

A call about the abuse Perch received was made to Northumbria Police, but because the complainant was from County Durham, officers from that force will take up the issue.

A Durham Police spokesman said: "Northumbria Police contacted us yesterday afternoon after a member of the public complained about allegedly racist comments posted on Twitter.

"As the complainant lives in County Durham the matter was referred to Durham Constabulary and an appointment has been made for an officer to visit them and take further details."

Last month a student who abused football pundit Stan Collymore was ordered to carry out 240 hours unpaid work.

Joshua Cryer, 21, from Jesmond, Newcastle, had set out to provoke a reaction from the former Liverpool and Aston Villa striker and used a racial insult, Newcastle Magistrates heard.

Extremely limited vocabulary seems to be common in some idiot Twitterers who also think they are anonymous.

Wasn't going to go there Ste99 but they do seem to be leading the charge!!!

It's not even as though you can 'do a Hartlepool' & plead ignorance these days.

Perhaps he thought this was the easiest way to join his mates on the dole as, (if guilty) it (he) looks like becoming one of the majority again...

im sorry but the finger must be pointed at liverpool fc kenny dalgliesh and co and the players they should like they said they would do have punished louis suarez for the racist comments he WAS found guilty of and also he DID admit saying the comments but tried to save himself by saying that in his country blah blah anyways they wore those tee-shirts and supported the rascism so hence there fans think its fine to do so several since that have been in trouble for it
now if liverpool fc and kenny dalgliesh had reprimanded suarez and stated that this was NOT acceptable and NOT worn those tee-shirts then there fans wouldnt be doing it would they
they would have sent the message out to them and the rest that it is NOT tolerated

am not saying this about all liverpool fans but there does seem to be a massive problem with racism in the game at the moment and the majority of this is from liverpool fans lately, evra, oldham and now this!

Nut, i've never said innocent, two completely different things, often get banded together to enhance one another granted but none the less different, eg, Stephen Ferris being bitten, (Rugby) he was a victim as he was bitten, he wasn't innocent though (even though he made out to be) as he was 'fish hooking' so was far from innocent.
I agree on the Evra front, he was far from innocent as he was giving plenty back, but he was a 'victim' (of racial abuse).
On the Heysel front, don't remember it too well as only young at the time & though individuals may have been, your correct in that the 'group' as Juve fans, of course weren't entirely innocent, in many ways Heysel was an incident (not accident) waiting to happen at a football match at the time.  Anyway, off to bed. Touche Nut, Smile   Unfortunately I think your lot managed that in Belgium 28 years ago... Sad

As I said, some peoples stupidity defies belief & your lot are being highlighted at the moment as the clubs stance made the whole issue much bigger than it needed to be because they played the victim & now they are paying the price.

Chess Nut (71), TBF the club can't control it & yes you are being tainted by association, unfortunately it's the price the club is paying for it's stance in the Evra affair as it seems to have encouraged all the numptys to come out of the woodwork, If the kid directly tweeted this to Perch then he truly is an imbecile of the highest order & deserves a slap for being soooo stupid... (supports the dippers doesn't he!!!)Surprised  sarcasm.

Concerning the Perch / Reina incident , ,,,,, bring in goalmouth technology and the outcome with the use of a fourth official , of that incident would have been,,,,, a reversed decision , PERCH red REINA yellow , should be ashamed of himself feigning contact from the movement of Reinas head toward him , knowing it would more than likely get him a red which it did !!  football has become such a dishonest game on and off the field !!

Why haven't the two major events that have surrounded football in England over the past 10 days or so , influenced the top flight clubs to try and bring back some respect ,humility and fair play back into the playing side of things , if the FA miss this moment in time they must be walking around with their eyes shut, ears closed and no idea how to use this time for the benefit of the game itself ,THE FOOTBALL FAMILY was a phrase that was used quite a bit , didn't look to much of a family at ST JAMES'S ( i know it's called something else now ?  ) On april fools day !

The Mancs want to blame LFC for the inane ranting of a 17year old on Twitter, if you want to see racism look no further than the Cities of Manchester and Salford, the highest ratings of racial incidents in the uk THIS YEAR.

I hope the 17year old is banned from all LFC games.

Faye.....funny word VICTIM.....i don't see much of it in Evra and i didn't see much of it in the faces of the Juventus fans who were rioting over an hour before kick off in Brussels. Yet they both claimed to be 'innocent' victims of a sort. Since then i think we've paid a high price Faye............. and continue to do so.

YNWA

Ste99.....i've long since given up trying to look for the facts where you're concerned. If it's in the gutter press your lot will believe it in order to feed your own stilted beliefs. Your glass house gets bigger every day.

Some good comments and some extremely naive ones. How can Liverpool FC control what comes out of a 17yr olds mouth on twitter.
Anything to do with Liverpool in the media is magnified whilst other instances of racism at other clubs is not given much air time.
