Rooney: England must do better at Euro 2012

England striker Wayne Rooney has urged his international team-mates to show the fans that winning Euro 2012 means everything to them.

England's players were criticised by the travelling supporters for their attitude during the ill-fated World Cup campaign in 2010, a state of affairs which Rooney blasted after the draw with Algeria.

The expectation around the England camp is significantly lower heading into this year's tournament in Poland and Ukraine, but Rooney feels that is no excuse for the players not to give 100% at all times.

"We know as players we're expected to do better than we have done in recent years, and we understand you're playing for England and there to be shot at," Rooney told the BBC.

"We need to give our all and it's important that comes across [to the fans]: that we are trying, not just turning up. We do try and win, and if sometimes that's not good enough then you do hold your hands up. That passion is there with the players same as [with] the fans."

He added: "I don't see why we can't win it. We've got the players and the quality, and with the new manager coming in it lifts everyone."

Rooney is suspended for the first two matches of Euro 2012.
