Scott Parker named England captain

Tottenham's Scott Parker is the surprise choice to captain England in their friendly with the Netherlands tonight.

The 31-year-old midfielder has won 10 caps and was influential in England's qualification for Euro 2012, winning England Fans' Player of the Year for 2011.

Parker takes over from John Terry who was stripped of the captaincy by the FA after being charged with racially abusing QPR's Anton Ferdinand.

Parker is not even his club side's captain or vice-captain, with Englishmen Ledley King and Michael Dawson holding those posts, and was sent off in his last match for Spurs when they lost 5-2 to north London rivals Arsenal.

Whilst at West Ham Parker was named Football Writer' Player of the Year in a season in which the Hammers were relegated.

Many thought Liverpool's Steven Gerrard, who skippered the side during the unsuccessful 2010 World Cup campaign, would lead the team out at Wembley tonight.

Gerrard lifted the Carling Cup their on Sunday after a thrilling penalty shootout win against Cardiff City.

Manchester City's Joe Hart and James Milner were also mooted as potential skippers.

Stuart Pearce, who has taken over temporary charge of the England team following Fabio Capello's resignation, has picked a young team to face the Dutch.

Speaking about the captaincy on Tuesday, Pearce said: "You want somebody who has the respect of the other players, someone who will put the group before themselves - a vital commodity for any captain."

The former England and Nottingham Forest player will be hoping that a good performance tonight will increase his chances of taking the team to the European Championships in Poland and Ukraine this summer.

I hope Gerrard retires from International football. Constantly ignored as the England captain and always played out of position to accomodate the more rubbish players!

YOU CANT BLAME 1 PLAYER (GERRARD) FOR ENGLAND'S DISMAL WORLD CUP.

WHAT DO YOU EXPECT WHEN THE SECOND CHOICE CENTRE BACK WAS MATTHEW UPSON. HE COULDNT EVEN STAND NEXT TO A LUCIO OR PUYOL AND SAY IM A FOOTBALLER

"Yes, MiLady. Thunderbirds are go".

Have I got the right Parker?

AS A SPURS FAN DELIGHTED FOR PARKER BUT LETS BE HONEST GERRARD SHOULD HAVE GOT THE ARMBAND BEFORE JT IN THE FIRST PLACE.

INCIDENTALLY, ISNT IT SAD THAT THIS IS CONSIDERED BIG NEWS OVER HERE.

IN BRAZIL OR ITALY THIS WOULD NOT MEAN MUCH AT ALL. OUR MENTAL-ITY TO FOOTBALL IN THIS COUNTRY IS LIKE AN EPISODE OF EASTENDERS; BICKER WHILST FORGETTING ABOUT REALITY.

NO WONDER WE CANT PRODUCE TRULY WORLD CLASS PLAYERS

@Martin Davies. Its a cup final, as if emotions wont be running high. Its very very rare that you see Gerrard 'effing' as you put it. I think you'll find Steven Gerrard is one of the most respected footballers in the game.

For those who are slinging mud about Gerrard and the assault, he was cleared by a jury (fact) for those who think otherwise, slander can be classed as harassment which, is a criminal offence and you are not free from prosecution on the web. IP addresses are tracable but I don't suppose you racist bigotted idiots think about that.

Ferdinand evaded drugs tests and his excuse, he forgot!

Why John Terry was ever captain is beyond me. The trouble with the English team is they are ALL divas. They all want to show they've got the bigger balls than everybody else. I like the fact that they have chosen someone who is barely known in the football world so let's hope this chap lays the smack down on those irritating primadonnas

Scot Parker is a great choice, he's been playing fantastic football and will never be in the headlines for the wrong reasons. Yes i am aware of the red card a couple of days ago but that only shows me the grit and determination he has on the field. A desire to win.

Picking Gerrard would have been to safe and for me Stevie G plays actually better when he isn't captain. To say that is Naivity on Stuat Pearce's part is the dumbest thing i have heard all day.

Also just while im at it, i would like to add my own personal opinion. England will never win anything !  EVER!!!!! UNTILL THE COUNTRY STOPS EXPECTING SO MUCH FROM THEM !

AND IT'S PURELY BECAUSE OF THE FANS WHO **** & MOAN ABOUT EVERY LITTLE THING. THE DECISION A MANAGER MAKES IS WHAT UPSETS PEOPLE THEN THEY JUST GIVE UP HOPE & FAITH IN THE TEAM.

I MEAN JEES IT'S MONTHS AWAY TILL THE EUROS KICK OFF. **** UP!!!!!

Good choice I think. Scott seems to give his all whenever he puts on the shirt

Fans player of the Year - Football Writers player of the year - bit of grit - pride in the shirt - on form - and(the most important) not a prima donna who considers himself above the  world at large.Seems a great choice to me.

Few weeks in the job and Stuart Pearce has already done more good for England than Capello managed in 4 years. Now, if you could get rid of Lampard, Ferdinand, Gerrard and Terry.

Stuart Pearce for England manager!

The captain isn't supposed to be the best player, or the big game player, or anything like that. The captain of a football team keeps everyone together, leads by example, calms his players when they're too hyped, and fires them up when they're not hyped enough. He should be respected by his team mates, the coaching staff and the fans.
John Terry was a good captain because he always put 100% into every game. Unfortunately, he's also a racist, and has therefore no longer got the respect of anyone. Scott Parker, a player who also always gives his all, and who has never really been in the newspapers as a part of a scandal, isn't seen as a 'bad boy', is generally a good role model, is pretty much perfect to stand in.
I would have gone with Gerrard as the experienced captain, who also shares these qualities with Parker, but as people have said it is unlikely he'd play the whole game, if he plays at all.

All the best to Scott Parker.  Hope he and the team have a great match.

Everyone is too negative nowadays and that is how the government and press gradually grind us down.

Look to the future be thankful for every day and be happy.

as a red, i'm made up

stevie should now realise that he is wasting his time with england and retire from international football

hopefully parker will lead them into euro 2012, where they will continue to be an embarrassment just like every other tournament

stuart pearce as manager - how funny is that -yet another example of the fa's crass decision making

I'm one of Parkers biggest fans, yet he is not England captain material.
This only goes to prove how inept the FA are in appointing a tactically naive person as Pearce as interim manager.
They were quick enough to strip Terry of the armband ( right decision ) why not appoint their own captain.
Gerrard is still the best candidate for the role. If they really wanted to be bold then it should have been Joe Hart

We need someone to manage the england team who is english and has passion for the team, stuart pearce ticks those boxes, also making scott parker captin is a good move in my opinion as he is a professional and sets a good example. About time someone different is captin as its also the same old story with hearing those names lampard, gerrard etc

It's a friendly!!!!! stop whinging about Stuart Pearce's choice for Captain!! and those still harping on about John Terry he should have never been captain in the first place, lets face it Capello had no idea.  I'd have given it to Gerrard before him.....When the new manager comes in (hopefully it will be Harry) he will pick a different team and captain and I personally think the England team will be in safe hands when Harry is at the helm....he should have been there well before now!! Lets just hope he doesn't take Barry or Lampard to Euro's There are better midfielders than them two Carrick, Cleverley, Obviously Parker and Gerrard.

i hope gerrard retires from international football now after this decision ,he leads and inspires liverpool ,stuart pierce has humiliated gerrard with this choice.i hope the fa hurry up and get a decent manager in that knows what they are doing for once.give harry the job an english manager for an english team who knows the players

Scottie Parker, is a great player, very committed to what he does, and he should make a great captain. It was Arsen Wengers, loss when he refused to pay West Hams, asking price, when Parker, was up for transfer.
