Vidic injury blow for United

Nemanja Vidic has been ruled out for eight weeks after having knee surgery

Nemanja Vidic has been ruled out for eight weeks after having knee surgery

Manchester United have been dealt another injury hammer blow after skipper Nemanja Vidic was ruled out for eight weeks following knee surgery.

Vidic, who missed the final five months of last season after rupturing his cruciate in the Champions League defeat to Basle, missed Sunday's Premier League win at Liverpool after complaining of tightness in his right knee. However, a subsequent examination revealed a greater problem, prompting Vidic to be sent for an operation, which has now been completed.

"Nemanja Vidic has had a meniscus operation on his right knee and will be out for around eight weeks," said a club spokesman.

"(Manager) Sir Alex (Ferguson), as a precautionary measure, rested Vidic at the weekend, after he complained of tightness in his knee, however, further medical investigation revealed the underlying problem.

"The central defender was operated on this week and will be sidelined for about eight weeks."

As the new injury is the same knee as Vidic ruptured his cruciate, it is bound to spark fears of another major problem for the 31-year-old.

Even on the timescale United have highlighted it would rule the Serbian out of the Red Devils' next three Champions League matches in addition to seven Premier League games, including key meetings with Chelsea and Arsenal.

However, the worry must be that Vidic will be out for even longer, robbing Ferguson of a major component of his entire squad.

Short-term, it provides the United boss with a major headache. As Phil Jones has been ruled out for a similar period of time with the same problem and Chris Smalling is yet to resume training after a broken metatarsal, it leaves Ferguson with only two fit central defenders, and Jonny Evans picked up a knock at Anfield.

to the uniformed persons talking about man utd debts....

Whilst it pains me to say it as a Chelsea supporter , the only reason man utd have debt is because the glaziers in their infinite wisdom saddled the club with debt from their american companies mainly from empty shopping malls, I think im right in believing that man utd either dont lose money as a single concern or very little...

Manchester United had a problem at the end of last season without him. I wish him a quick recovery. We defended well on Sunday without him though. GLORY GLORY

He hadn't even fully recovered from his previous knee injury, this is not just a blow for Utd but a massive problem for Vidic. To get a reoccurring injury can ruin a career, he needs plenty of time to recover this time, good luck Vidic.

Lets hope the likes of Smalling and Jones can get back to fitness soon and of course no more injuries please, defensive injuries has blighted us for the past few years.

It's very unlikely but a defender should be signed in January, maybe Jagielka?

Fergie will have to give Scott Wooten a chance tomorrow night the kid did well in pre season and deserves a chance in the League cup against good opposition in Newcastle. It's the perfect opportunity for the lad.

Bad news. He's a great player and leaves a big gap in Uniteds defense when he's not available. Hope the injury recovers as quickly as predicted and he has time to get fully fit  before he has to play again. It looks like he may have come back a little too soon.

A pleasure to watch and a credit to himself and his club.

Man U will struggle without this guy. A defender coming back from knee surgery, will play on his mind. I wish him well, a solid player, not scared of much.

maurice jones..why you still putting up 90 trophies ? how many of them are actual proper trophies? still counting the carlsberg trophy..that noone else competes in? what about division 2 winners..counting that? charity shield? counting the shared as trophy won? what about lancashire league? i think if you count only proper trophies then your total would drop significantly.to around 40..i see now why you count the meaningless ones lol

I love all the hate for Vidic. On his day, he is one of the best defenders in the game and i bet there isn't a team in the world that wouldn't have him.
Wish the bloke a speedy recovery.
