Wigan hoping to tie down England's Lionel Messi

Victor Moses equalises for Wigan with a well-placed shot, West Brom v Wigan, Premier League, The Hawthorns, West Bromwich, December 10, 2011

Victor Moses is in talks over a new Wigan deal

Roberto Martinez has made the astonishing claim that Wigan are locked in talks with English football's version of Lionel Messi.

Victor Moses currently has just 18 months to run on his deal at the DW Stadium. Martinez eyes the 21-year-old as one of the top talents in England and is desperate to wrap up a new contract.

With Wigan currently bottom of the Premier League table, Martinez is fully aware that he could lose his top talents if the Latics are relegated this season. A player of Moses' calibre would attract plenty of attention.

The former Crystal Palace man can be rated no higher than at his current club, though, where Martinez eyes the youngster as a potential world star.

"There have been developments," Martinez said in the Sun. "I am sure we are going to be able to extend his contract. He said he wants to stay but we have got to secure our top-flight status.

"His actions in one-on-ones are sensational, and when you see him in possession, you think he could easily have been born in Holland or Spain. You do not see many players like him in the modern game. Charles N'Zogbia is one, Messi is another."

Chris, if you classes players purely on there performances at world cups then messi is not world class lol cause done done nothing at the world cup either, but surely anyone that knows anything about football knows it takes more then just individual talent to be world class.

Im neither a manu or liverpool fan. but i agree gerrard is past his best now, still very good though, and rooney when he is firing full throttle is world class, but his form is far to inconsistent.

are you having a f****in laugh? and cahill's the next maldini i suppose! what a load of, Moses got more chance of being in the next bible than coming anywhere close to being "Englands Messi!" TRIPE

i find most of the comments below regarding steven gerrard and wayne rooney classed by fans of liverpool and manchester united as WORLD CLASS as pathetic, didnt any of these "FANS"see these players on the WORLD STAGE known as the WORLD CUP, the english team was a joke, what makes the likes of gerrard  and rooney look good at their respective clubs are the foreign players,if they were world class players they would have been bought by the top foreign clubs years ago ,none of these clubs have been interested in them, and lets be fair about it the two of them would have been off like a shot, theres no loyalty with players when it comes to money and you cant blame them for that.and good luck to victor moses, you cant do worse than gerrard and rooney if you get an international career theyve done or won nothing(EXCEPT TAKE THE MONEY).

Someone is either having a laugh or they need a checkup from the neckup, they said Rooney is world class, the only way he's an international is because he's English, he'd never get into a top European or South American national side in a million years. When will these people learn, just because a player is English doesn't make him world class.

must be talking about his FIFA12 players

Chris X - I agree its looking that way and it is a massive shame. However trophies make the club not the player. A player can be world class without winning trophies. Had Gerrard played in the 70's and 80's he would still have been our best player but would have had the quality around him. League titles are built on great squads. Unfortunately we haven't had a great squad for a very long time. I still think that considering who Gerrard has had to play with, he is the greatest player to ever wear the Liverpool shirt. Anyone that argues that Gerrard is anything but world class is just proving they know nothing about the game. Simple as that.

Peitro - That fact that you claim that Gerrard is in no way a world class player, not only shows your inability to look past your own club but also shows you know NOTHING at all about football. Every single football expert and professional would all label Steve Gerrard world class.

You claim Rooney is world class but maybe apart from the overhead kick against City, none of Rooneys goals would get into Gerrards top 10. And Rooney is a Striker.

Gerrard has carried a club almost on his own over the years and apart from the last couple of years were he has had some injuries we have been in the top four every year. Along with that he has lifted the Champions League when we had a very average squad and without a doubt single handeldly won us the FA cup in 2006 (probably the greatest FA cup final ever due to Gerrard).

What has Rooney done other than get brought for a huge amount on money and put into a squad with top quality players. The only thing I can think of is under perform for his country (which Gerrard rarely does) and hold his club to ransom (which Gerrard would never do).

Peitro you do disappoint me as on occasions you can make an unbiased post. However claiming Gerrard is not world class is simply idiotic.

@David Hugues, yo're a legend. We would've won 2 or 3 with Clough/Taylor but they had wrong accents...Could these posts be any funnier?

If he is the next Messi - which he isn't - then why would he sign a new contract. What's with the racism too Martinez? Incinuating a player born in England can't be good in posession of the ball? #worsecommentthanjohnterrymade

B1TCHESSSS!!!! :D

@peitro - I'd actually say it was the other way round if you were saying one rather than the other.  That might be a tad biased BUT i think a lot of people would agree and i dont just mean LFC supporters :-)

@George - do you really think so?  I think they're both world class tbh still (and it kills me to say that about a man u player haha)  I think the only thing wrong with Gerrard ability wise is his ability to pick up injuries.  I still think footballing wise he's one of the best midfielders in the world :-)
