Wolves appoint Connor until end of season

Mick McCarthy celebrates with Terry Connor, Burnley v Wolverhampton Wanderers, Premier League, Turf Moor, Burnley, March 13, 2010

Terry Connor will succeed Mick McCarthy

Wolves' caretaker boss Terry Connor has been appointed as manager of the club until the end of the season.

Connor has been at the club for 13 years and has served under four different managers, while he was Mick McCarthy's assistant for the majority of his time at Wolves. He will now take charge for the final 13 games of the season with a trip to Newcastle first up on Saturday.

A statement on the Wolves site read: "Wolves are pleased to announce that Terry Connor is to take on the managerial reins at Molineux until the end of the season."

Chairman Steve Morgan added: "Since we made the difficult decision to part company with Mick, we have been through a diligent process of assessing potential candidates.

"Having spoken to a number of people we have drawn that process to a close and myself and the board are unanimous that Terry is the right man to lead the club for the remainder of the season.

"This is a decisive step, which creates certainty, and the players are fully behind it. As a club, whether that be staff or supporters, we now all need to unite behind Terry and the players and secure as many points as possible over the next 13 games."

Earlier Connor had pleaded for club owner Morgan and chief executive Jez Moxey to be given time to find the right successor to sacked manager McCarthy and admitted he could be interested in the role.

Morgan and Moxey have so far drawn a blank in replacing McCarthy full-time after failing with approaches to the likes of Alan Curbishley, Brian McDermott, Gus Poyet and Walter Smith. Connor had claimed on Thursday that he could be tempted if things went his way.

He said: ''I have worked all my life to try and better myself. I've been a player, youth team, reserve team, assistant manager and been on my courses for management.

''I've worked towards possibly being a manager someday but right now I'm employed now by the club as assistant manager. They want to appoint a new manager and I'm just looking after things until decisions have been made."

Former Wolves defender Joleon Lescott, now at Manchester City, believes Connor is one of the best coaches he has worked with.

''TC is one of the most influential coaches I have worked with in my career - and that includes everyone I have worked with. I owe him a lot," Lescott said. "There are many other things he told me at the time that I maybe didn't realise immediately but then, as I developed in my career, started to work really well.

''He's a proper football man, and probably one of the most knowledgeable about the game that there is around and helped to develop people like Matt Jarvis and Michael Kightly.'

''TC had a lot of respect from the players at the time when I was there and I am sure that will be the same from the lads who are at Wolves now.

''He was always such a focused and determined person and everything was so well organised that, if he is in charge of Wolves on Saturday, they will certainly be well prepared.''

Some common sense at last. However I am sure TC would be the first to say that Steve Morgan could demonstrate even more leadership if he had called Mick M and put pride to one side. The return of MM would be the best solution, but in the meantime TC will at least have support from everyone and all the best to him.

What a joke. They obviously couldn't get anyone else to take the job so they have appointed the existing Assistant Manager Terry Connor.  I'm afraid Wolves are going down,  I would have preferred Mick to have stayed on as he had been able to keep Wolves up for several seasons. The decision to sack him has now come back to bite the Chairman

that's it then, start planning for the championship, this guy could'nt run a p up in a brewery, the board have let down the loyal fans of our great club they should be ashamed of themselves

If the main man MM can't do it how will his assistant.  Look what happened when Steve Mclaren took over from Sven.  Bad move Moxey, Wolves are going down.

I think the only reason we can't get a manager is because of Morgans reluctance to invest in the team instead of building up the stands. Note to owners, no one wants to watch championship football just so you can stay in profit. Show some initiative and bid for some top players, even if they say no it shows that you at least want to buy big. Sell Kevin Doyle or put him in midfield as he seems to think that is his position.

Did Sven ever manage england...I thought it was steve mclaren doing the job the whole time under him anyway. It was always mclaren you'd see doing the running up and down the pitch shouting at players and with the clipboard in hand giving out orders.

Makes sense if you want to save money, plus that i heard to day that T conner happens to be Jez Moxely's brother in law

looks bad if its true Embarrassed

BUT  IT DOES SAVE MONEY  I SUSPECT Open-mouthed

The truth of this situation is, that Nobody of any standing has expressed the slightest interest in the Wolves managers Job and those that have been approached have said NO....

They have little choice but to appoint from within, to end the embarrasment that nobody wants to join a Premiership Club that treats its managers like Mick McCarthty has been treated.

If T Conner has been at the club 13 years, maybe its him who should have been sacked. He can't bring anything new to the table. All the same people doing the same thing Minus MM.  How can that be a forward move?

@ Dave morris

Well England did better under Sven , than when Mclaren took over. Who can disagree with that?  This is about Wolves anyway.  I was only making a comparison.  You got 8 thumbs down for your comment. need I say More.  Jog on.

Apart from there next game I wish the bloke the best of luck, but he isn't bringing anything new to the table. Nobody wanted the job which means the players that are there aren't good enough to survive. Apart from one less wage sacking MM to then not replace him was a mistake, they should have had a replacement lined up or kept faith, this is suicide and hello fizzy pop
