This afternoon's meeting at Newcastle goes ahead following two morning inspections.

Officials at Gosforth Park were forced to assess conditions at 9am and 11am after overnight temperatures dipped to minus 3.5C.

Although the course was frozen in places following an initial inspection, conditions have improved sufficiently for clerk of the course James Armstrong to give the thumbs-up.

He said: "Temperatures are up 6C and the sun is shining so we are fine."
