Murray powers to gold medal glory

By Mike Robinson 05/08/2012 16:14

Andy Murray wins gold - PABritish number one Andy Murray claimed the biggest title of his tennis career as he comprehensively outplayed the legendary Roger Federer to take Olympic gold.

At two games all in the first set things seemed to be going to the script of a tight match with the world number one and recent Wimbledon champion overcoming his British opponent for the second time on centre court in exactly four weeks.

Murray, however, had other plans and reeled off an incredible ten straight games to take that first set 6-2 and open up a 5-0 lead in the second.

With union flags fluttering all across the crowd the Suisse had no answer for Murray’s more aggressive play and lost his serve at 2-2 in the third set to succumb to a 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 loss after an epic battle on Murray’s serve in the third game of the second set.

The Scotsman then served out his last three games to round off a memorable victory.

Murray has the chance of a double gold for Team GB today as he partners Laura Robson against Victoria Azarenka and Max Mirnyi from Belarus at 4pm.

What the hell is going on ? Why do we still have all this racism ? The UK (England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales) has got the olympics. We are doing well, every normal person is fully supporting ANY of our althletes, wherever they come from. Why the hell do we have this idiotic anti-scottish attitude to a winner like Murray, (one of the best tennish players in the world). I even seen comments from BNP supporters criticising the colour of some British althletes, presumably wanting to send them back to where their grandparents were born (before the UK begged them to come to this country and help us build what we have today). I am a white english pensioner, I am proud to be british especially during these Olympics, and fully support ALL our althletes, whatever colour, creed or race. Please give this thumbs up if you hate these ignorant racists on MSN.

Phenomenal game by Murray. Outplayed Federer comprehensively in the final, beat Djokovic in straight sets in the semis too all the while making the mixed doubles final with Laura Robson. These Olympics have really made Murray a force to be reckoned with, and I think McEnroe said it best: Djokovic, Nadal, Federer and Murray have now all won major tournaments last year. The first 3 grand slams and Murray the Olympics! This will make the US Open very exciting indeed.

To all the haters, for goodness sake,  for your own dignity  try to grow up.

Murray won, simple as that. Nothing to do with whether he's a Scot or not.

He's shy, so what;  he's a tennis player not  an Orator.

Well done Andy ... you did everyone  proud.

Why can't you miserable lot just be happy for Andy Murray. We don't need to read your snide comments  about the Murray family............... they have nothing to do with todays results and they certainly have nothing to do with sport or the spirit of the Olympic games.

Congratulations to all Olympians.

Find it strange that there are always (mostly) only 2 negatives re Andy on here (and we know who that's probably the same saddo person with 2 accounts) well done Andy if you hate him because he's Scottish your loss, (he's not arrogant he's just not an orator) great performance by the GB tram well done to them all (I hope to see those 2 negative "thumbs done" now you know who you are)

What a bunch of totally ignorant plonkers. The boy done good, and has probably done much more with his life than all you useless sofa-critics. He's talented and brave and does it for GB. You should be proud of him and not resentful that he's a Scot. As for his self-presentation, he's just shy. It's not a crime. I wish some of you lot were equally shy and just shut up. And you could grow up, too, while you're at it...
