Adlington sets up relay option for GB
Rebecca Adlington claimed the 200 metres freestyle title at the British Gas ASA National Championships
Rebecca Adlington has added a possible relay swim to her two Olympic title defences on a night at Ponds Forge that saw David Carry close to tears after booking a spot on the Great Britain team for his third Games.
Adlington overhauled Rebecca Turner in the final 25 metres to claim the 200 metres freestyle title at the British Gas ASA National Championships which double as the final Olympic selection meet to win in one minute 58.68 seconds.
While Turner had already qualified for both the individual event and the 4x200m relay in the first trials at the Aquatics Centre in March, Adlington's effort earned her a relay spot along with Lucy Ellis who finished third.
Adlington was, however, philosophical about the prospect of being part of the quartet given the demands of her 400m and 800m freestyle defences. She said: "I'd love to be part of that relay but I have got my individual races to concentrate on. I think at the Olympics they will probably swim the fastest four in the heats.
"If they want to include me in the heat then brilliant, if not I think they need to swim the fastest four so we'll see what their decision is and what they are going to do with that."
Turner is still the only individual entrant in the 200m although former Commonwealth champion Caitlin McClatchey - who withdrew through illness - will be considered after swimming the required time in March.
City of Sheffield's Turner was beaming after clocking 1:59.11 amid heavy training, and said: "Yes, I came second but the main aim was for race practice. When I'm rested and ready to go the back end will be there so now I'm just excited for the Olympics."
In contrast to their calm, Carry was highly emotional after setting a new personal best of 3:46.86 to claim the second 400m freestyle slot alongside Robbie Renwick.
He said: "I've never been so emotional after a race before. This season more than any has been really quite tricky for me - I've had an injury and other things going on. So to come back to swim like that is just really incredible."
