Duo secure GB's best gymnastics result
Kristian Thomas finished seventh in the men's individual gymnastics competition
Japan's Kohei Uchimura won individual all-round gold at the North Greenwich arena as British duo Kristian Thomas and Daniel Purvis secured Britain's best ever result in the Olympic competition.
Uchimura, who won silver in the all-around four years ago in Beijing, was not at his scintillating best but scored 92.690 to see off the challenge of German Marcel Nguyen in silver medal position with American Danell Leyva in bronze, just under two points off the lead.
Britain's Thomas finished seventh and Purvis 13th, bettering the 20th-place finish earned by both Neil Thomas at the 1992 Barcelona Games and Daniel Keatings four years ago in Beijing.
Thomas was not too disappointed to miss out on an individual Olympic all-around medal after an error on the vault.
Thomas, who will compete in the vault final on Monday, had a solid all-around performance, with one huge step on his vault landing proving to be costly, scoring only 14.908 - more than a mark down on his score in Monday's team final where Britain won bronze.
"I wasn't coming here expecting to win an all-around medal so I've got to take the positives from everything else I did today," Thomas told Press Association Sport.
"Doing such a big, high-tariff vault sometimes it will go one way, sometimes it will go the other way, which it did today. It's one of those things.
"Everyone might say 'what if', but how can I not be happy? Qualification went really well, the team final was amazing, we couldn't have done any better.
"I set a new record today finishing seventh. I've done 16 routines and only made one fall so far, so that shows I'm in pretty good shape."
