Reception honour for rower Reed
Pete Reed, second from the right, is being honoured for his Olympic achievements
Olympic rowing champion Pete Reed will be honoured with a civic reception and open-top bus tour in his home town.
Civic leaders in Nailsworth, near Stroud, Gloucestershire, are planning an event fitting of a double Olympian.
Reed, who is in the Royal Navy and a former Oxford Blue, won gold at London 2012 in the men's coxless four, retaining the title he first won at Beijing in 2008.
It has been a busy few weeks for the 31-year-old, as he also proposed to his girlfriend Frauke Oltmanns during the Olympic closing ceremony.
Leo Reed, the rower's father, said: "We have been overwhelmed by the response of the local community and very proud of our son's achievement as a double Olympian and are delighted that he has announced that he will go on and race in the next Olympics.
"We're very much looking forward to the celebrations in Stroud and Nailsworth.
"It's been an amazing few weeks topped off by Peter proposing to his girlfriend Frauke during the closing ceremony."
Exact details of the event, which is to take place on September 15, have not yet been revealed. But the plan is to have a civic reception at Stroud Subscription Rooms at around midday.
Afterwards an open-top bus will leave Stroud and make its way through the town centre and on to Nailsworth. There Reed will meet members of the public from his hometown at Nailsworth Town Hall.
Councillor John Hudson, chairman of Stroud District Council, said: "We hope that celebrating his success will inspire and motivate other local athletes to go on and achieve great things - maybe even more gold medals at the Rio Games in 2016."
