Peter Wilson was tied for the lead after first qualifying round

Britain's number one double trap shooter Peter Wilson has given himself a great chance of reaching the final after a solid display in the first round of qualifying.

Wilson, 25, from Dorset, missed just two shots to lie in a four-way tie for the lead on 48 points going into the second round

The world record holder and world number two is among the favourites for gold and is looking to win Britain's first shooting medal since Richard Faulds topped the podium in Sydney 12 years ago.

In a further boost to his chances, Wilson's big rival and world number one Josh Richmond of the USA missed six shots and is down in ninth place.

The opening round did not go so well for Faulds, though.

At 35, and competing in his fifth Olympics, Faulds missed 11 shots for a total of 39 to leave him down in 21st place.

The top six after the third qualifying round will go through to this afternoon's final.
