Fox focused on medals quest
Jonathan Fox uses a Rubik's Cube to get him 'in the zone' for competition
When Jonathan Fox looks to block out any distractions in the final minutes before his races he will turn to the Rubik's cube that has accompanied him across the world for the past six years.
The 21-year-old was given a cube by his grandmother before his first World Championships in South Africa in 2006.
Since then, it has travelled the world with Fox, who has honed his skill at solving the puzzle to the extent he has it down to one minute and 30 seconds.
For Fox, the Rubik's cube enables him to "get in the zone" along with the heavy metal music he listens to on his I-pod.
He said: "I managed to do it and just got better. There are millions and millions of combinations but just one solution: there are just seven steps really. I've brought it with me, it's been everywhere. It's got a few bumps and scratches but its still going. It zones me out (before a race)."
London will be Fox's second Paralympics following his debut in Beijing where he won silver in the S7 100 metres backstroke.
The Manchester-based swimmer then claimed three gold and two silver medals at the following year's European Championships in Reykjavik.
The 2010 IPC World Championships in Eindhoven ended with gold in the backstroke and bronze in the 400m freestyle with three golds, a silver and two bronzes at last year's Europeans.
Such success leads to expectation but Fox, although confident, is not looking too far ahead, calling to mind the oft-repeated athlete's mantra of only being able to control their own performance.
He said: "I fancy my chances of getting maybe a gold but like with any Paralympics you can't count your chickens. So I am just going to go in there with a plan and execute it as well as I can and see what happens."
