Top seeded Serbian Janko Tipsarevic was pushed to the limit by Germany's Bjorn Phau before making sure of his place in the semi-finals of the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart.

The world number eight had to fight back from a set down to overcome his tough opponent, who saved 11 of 12 break points he faced in the first set, before winning 6-7 (6/8) 7-6 (7/2) 6-4.

Tipsarevic will play Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci in the last four after the world number 64 ended the hopes of home favourite Cedrik-Marcel Stebe, breaking five times in a 6-4 6-1 victory.

Second-seeded Argentinian Juan Monaco eased past qualifier Pavol Cervenak 6-1 7-5 and will play Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, a 6-0 6-3 winner over Germany's Dustin Brown, in the other semi-final.
