Interesting fact: Muirhead is a scratch golfer and considered turning professional.

Muirhead's dramatic final-stone triumph over Sweden to win the 2013 World Curling Championships for Scotland had echoes of a more famous victory.

She was just 11 years old when Rhona Martin won Olympic curling gold for Great Britain in Salt Lake City in 2002, edging out Switzerland with her final shot.

Many believe Muirhead's breakthrough in the senior ranks in 2013 makes her favourite to follow in Martin's footsteps and lead Great Britain back to Olympic curling gold.

Muirhead is a four-time world junior champion whose father Gordon also competed in the Olympics and won two world silver medals. Muirhead's younger brother Thomas also won world junior gold in 2013, two weeks before Muirhead's senior triumph.

She disappointed on her Olympic debut in Vancouver, failing to get past the round-robin phase, but vowed to learn from the experience.

I think it is appalling - given Russia's human rights record and anti-gay laws, that these games have not been boycotted. Shame on everyone who goes or takes part. Shame.
