Martin Fourcade won his second gold medal of the Sochi Winter Olympic Games when he claimed victory in the men's 20km individual biathlon on Thursday.

The Frenchman had also triumphed in the 12.5km pursuit on Monday, having started off his Games with an unexpectedly poor sixth place in the men's sprint.

Fourcade skied strongly throughout and missed one shot as he held off silver medallist Erik Lesser of Germany by just over 12 seconds, with Russia's Evgeniy Garanichev taking bronze on his 26th birthday.

Fourcade said: "It's a really different feeling from two days ago - less excitement, less agitation but not less happiness."

Fourcade was almost joined on the podium by compatriot Jean Beatrix, who set the pace throughout and might have taken gold but for a single missed shot on the final lap.

There was more disappointment for Norway's Emil Hegle Svensen, who finished seventh, while Ole Einar Bjoerndalen, seeking a record-breaking 13th Winter Olympic medal, shot badly and finished well adrift in 34th place.
